The State of Indian Startup Funding in 2026
Indian startup funding peaked in 2021–22 at $40+ billion and corrected sharply in 2023–24. By 2025–26, funding has stabilised at a more rational level, with investors focusing on fundamentals — path to profitability, sustainable unit economics, and teams with domain expertise. This is good news for founders building real businesses: the competition from "growth-at-all-costs" startups backed by cheap capital has reduced significantly. Investors are funding fewer deals but writing larger cheques to the startups they believe in.
What Indian Angel Investors Want to See
At pre-seed and seed stage (₹50 lakh to ₹2 crore), Indian angels invest primarily in people. They want: a founder who has deep domain knowledge (you have worked in the industry you are disrupting), a clear and specific problem statement with evidence that the problem exists (not assumptions), a product or mockup that shows you can build, and a credible go-to-market plan for the first 100 customers. At this stage, TAM slide and 5-year projections are less important than "can this person execute?"
What VCs Want (Series A and Beyond)
At Series A (typically ₹5–₹50 crore), VCs need: ₹1–₹3 crore in ARR with 15–30% month-over-month growth, retention metrics (net revenue retention above 100% for B2B SaaS is the gold standard), a clear explanation of CAC and LTV at the cohort level, a leadership team with relevant experience, and a defensible moat (network effects, data advantage, regulatory relationships, or switching costs).
The Pitch Deck Structure That Works
Indian investors read hundreds of decks. A ten-slide deck that covers: problem (one slide, specific and evidenced), solution (one slide, what you do differently), market size (TAM/SAM/SOM with bottom-up calculation), traction (metrics, not vanity metrics), business model (unit economics), team (why you specifically), competition (honest, acknowledging competitors exist), financials (18-month runway plan), and ask (how much, what for, expected outcomes) — this structure gets meetings.
