The Great Gateway Debate: PayU vs Razorpay
When building custom software or a SaaS platform for the Indian market, one of the most critical early decisions is choosing a payment gateway. The two undisputed leaders are Razorpay and PayU.
Both gateways offer extensive features, but for engineering teams and startup founders, the choice usually comes down to Developer Experience (DX), API reliability, settlement speeds, and pricing.
1. Developer Experience and API Design
Razorpay: Razorpay is often referred to as the "Stripe of India." Their API documentation is meticulously structured, highly readable, and their SDKs cover almost every modern framework (including Flutter, React Native, and Next.js). Setting up webhooks and handling the PaymentSuccessResponse is generally a breeze.
PayU: PayU has been around longer and powers some of India's largest enterprises. However, their legacy API documentation can sometimes feel fragmented. While they have modernized significantly, integrating PayU often requires a bit more trial-and-error compared to Razorpay's plug-and-play SDKs.
2. Settlement Times
By default, both platforms offer T+2 or T+3 settlement cycles. However, Razorpay's instant settlement options (for a small premium fee) can be a lifesaver for businesses with tight cash flow constraints.
3. Supported Payment Methods
Both gateways are virtually tied here. They both support all major UPI apps (GPay, PhonePe, Paytm), credit/debit cards, net banking, and newer instruments like EMI and Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL).
The Verdict
At DevXAI, when we build custom platforms for our clients, our default recommendation is Razorpay due to the superior developer experience. Faster integration means fewer billable hours spent fighting with APIs, allowing us to deliver your product faster and strictly within our fixed-price guarantee.
